Regression Testing

Regression testing is a software testing optimization method. Regression testing is employed when changes are made to a small subset of a system. A regression test consists of the minimum number of tests required to demonstrate that changed components retain their previous correct behavior as well as any intended changes.

Changed elements are mapped to validation test cases. The associated test cases are rerun. Without a previous map of components to test cases, a regression test is not possible and the entire validation test is required.

Regression testing is predicated on the notion that unintended changes occur in the production of intended changes. Sometimes the errors are as the result of configuration management errors.
